Our nine acres of Peonies are growing in fertile “corn belt” soil. The fields are a blaze of glory at blooming time, and visitors are always welcome. We send liberal 8 to 5 eye divisions, properly cut. This is the best size to plant, even better than a full sized clump. Roots are dug to order and shipped to you fresh and full of vigor.
FREE PEONY
If your order includes three Peonies listing at $1.25 or more each, or two at $1.50 or more each, we will include free of charge, one Peony of our own selection.
YOUR EARLY ORDER will be appreciated. We can give service at less labor cost on early orders, and early planting, though not imperative, is nevertheless highly advantageous.
MINIMUM ORDER, $2.00 plus 35c postage and packing. No C.O.D. shipments.
TERMS—Cash with order. Prices include delivery in the U. S. east of the Rockies on orders of $3.00 or more. Under $3.00 add 35c for postage and packing. Pacific Coast orders under $10.00 sent express collect, or add 6% extra for prepaid postage.
Canadian orders, add 25c for first root, 7c for each addi- tional root. Parcels post shipment simpler than express. Send import permit and remit in U. S. exchange.
Any complaint as to condition of roots must be made immediately upon receipt of package. We make no war- ranty as to growth as we do not control conditions nor care in our customers’ gardens.
This price list cancels all previous quotations, and is not in effect after Jan. 1, 1950.
SHIPMENT — Fall only, beginning Sept. 1st, until ground freezes. We do not recommend spring planting of Peonies.

OUR PRICE POLICY
We feel that our prices for new things are most reason- able, and we do not hesitate to lower these prices when a sufficient stock has been developed. This year, with fresh plantings of many of our finest kinds coming to saleable size, we are offering very substantial reductions on many of our higher priced kinds. This despite the fact that steadily increasing costs of labor, advertising, supplies, postage and express are a real factor in determining prices.
Some of our finest kinds are now in fair supply, and we therefore urge you to judge quality by the descriptions and not by comparative prices. In other words, some of our $1.00 to $2.50 kinds are among the very finest, and a variety priced at $10.00 or more is so priced because it is both fine and also because my stocks are still small. Be- cause of their normal slow rate of propogation, the prices asked for new peonies are relatively far lower than prices asked for new ‘roses, dahlias, irises or gladiolus. For in- stance, considering the time and effort involved, with a new iris priced at $15.00, an equable price for a new Peony could easily be $300.00.

THE AUTEN ORIGINATIONS
The 230 Auten named varieties of Peonies are the result of 33 years careful breeding and selection from thousands of new seedlings. These 230 kinds are not the only beautiful kinds obtained, but re-selections from many good ones to get distinctive colors, form of bloom, good plant habit and sure blooming late doubles for the warmer part of the Peony belt. No apology is made for the large number introduced, for no other originator has covered so wide a range in the pure Albiflora and in the Officinalis hybrid kinds. Visitors to our fields at once recognize the truth of our slogan “Auten Peonies are Different’.

THE AUTEN JAPS
The Japanese type Peonies of Auten origination are a vast improvement on those kinds which originally came from Japan. They are more refined in color, more vigor- ous in growth, and with an entirely new range of colors and color combinations that mark a new era in the history of the Peony. For garden effect they make large, strong plants loaded with bloom, and are not beaten down by storms as badly as the large doubles. They are unsurpassed for unusual and charming arrangements in- doors. To see them is to want them. Sales of the Auten Japs have increased regularly every year.

JAP TYPES FINE FOR CUTTING
There is a common belief among many uninformed people that the Japanese type blooms, because they are not so large nor so full as the doubles, do not last as well when cut. This is incorrect, many of the Japs having exceptional keeping qualities. They give somewhat the same effect of the singles, and they give color contrasts obtainable in no other way with the Peony.
They are much more graceful in arrangements and bas- kets than many of the massive doubles.
ee
FROM KENTUCKY—Every year some of my customers see Gay Paree and want it.
FROM ILLINOIS—This year I enjoyed Rosalie about as much as anything in the patch.
FROM WASHINGTON—Your Officinalis Hybrids are wonderful. You are to be congratulated.
FROM ILLINOIS—We saw your flowers. They are beautiful beyond words. FROM WISCONSIN—A neighbor saw Rosalie this spring and with her it is a must have.
FROM WASHINGTON—Of the small ones, I had Lucky Star last June, and I liked it aside from its novel form, and it caught as much attention as any in the collection of near 100.
FROM NEW JERSEY—Roberta was particularly fine.
FRoM KAnsAs—Glad to hear you can furnish 10 Tempest as we consider this one of the finest in our collection.
FROM MAINE—Louis Joliet’s first blooms (4) were as breath taking as any peony I have ever seen. Sword Dance with 80 odd flowers—well, you know how beautiful this Peony can be.
FROM NEBRASKA—Your Hybrid Peonies bloomed beautifully this spring and I want more.
FROM MARYLAND—I am merely an amateur Peony lover, but do have quite a number of varieties, bought here and there, and I can honestly say that none excell my small sample of your originations.

WHITE JAPS. Auten Originations.
Undoubtedly the finest white Jap that ever came from Japan is the variety Isani-Gidui. It has white guard petals of wonderful form and substance, and a center of yellow petaloids. But the stem is not the best and the plant also lacks vigor. The Auten white Japs, most of them seedlings of Isani Gidui, are the same type of bloom, some are larger, most of them have deeper yellow centers than Isani Gidui, and all are on vigorous plants with good stems. You need look no further for top quality white Japs.

WHITE JAPS—TWICE ADVANCED SEEDLINGS
The named white Japs listed above were selected from over 70 new, twice advanced seedlings, probably the finest lot of new white Japs ever developed. The following kinds are offered under number at a bargain price, their ony fault being that those chosen for naming were a bit

YUKON, BEST BLOOM 1948 SHOW
The honor of Best Bloom in Show, at the 1948 exhibition of the American Peony Society, held at Guelph, Canada, was given to an enormous New Jersey grown bloom of our pure white double “Yukon”. It was 91% inches in diameter. While for several reasons we cannot ourselves exhibit at shows, the high quality of the Auten originations is proved by their winning when they are shown. At Guelph Mary Auten, Auten’s Pride, Naomi, Tempest were included in large winning classes. Tempest won first for specimen double red, Moon of Nippon for white Jap, White Perfection for single, also Arcturus, Sword Dance won in other classes. At the New York show, Chocolate Soldier won among the hybrids in very hot competition. Moon of Nippon, Dancing Nymph took firsts, while Angelus, Kickapoo, Mischief. and Kankakee placed behind other Auten kinds.

FROM MICHiIGAN—I want to report to you my reat satisfaction with your dwarf Peony “Flower Girl’.
FROM PENNSYLVANIA—I still like Old Main and June Brilliant, and of course some of the Japanese type.
FrRoM Nova ScoTia—Nippon Brilliant performed very creditably—it has always done well for me and I like it very much. Auten’s Pride did very well and I like it very much. Arcturus was prominent at the show and very handsome, too.

OFFICINALS HYBRIDS Auten Originations
This new race of early bloomers is of surpassing beauty, giving entirely new shades, and reds more brilliant than any regular red variety. They start blooming about ten days before the common peonies, and the latest of them bloom with the first of the common kinds. They should be in every garden. They are in great demand, and stocks are still small. Several kinds have been withdrawn in order to build up adequate reserves.
N. B. Strong divisions of all hybrids will be sent, but because of their peculiar shape, some may have only one or two eyes.

From OHI0—TI’ll take Sistie over any Peony I have bought from you so far. I especially like the bloom color and formation, and moreover it sure is dependable.
FROM NEW YORK—The Peonies I bought from you last year are doing very well and Fairbanks is beautiful indeed.
FROM NEW JERSEY—The “Yukon’’ (best bloom in show, 1949) was a 91% incher, stiff, proud and perfect posture. It was as the drifted snow fore and aft, and was an eye filler, I assure you.

PLANTING DIRECTIONS
IMPORTANT—Open your package of roots immediately when they arrive. Plant as soon as possible but if you have to wait a few days, either keep moist in open box in cool cellar, or better yet, bury in garden.
Plant Peonies in good, well drained soil, in full sun if possible, and away from trees, buildings, etc. Do not plant where a peony has been before, unless all old soil is taken out and replaced with fresh. Plant 3 to 4 feet apart; set so that the eyes point upward and are 2 to 3 inches below the top of ground (very important). Give each root 2 quarts of water when planted, and then make a 6 inch mound of dirt above ground level to prevent heaving, scrape mound away late next spring.
In northern states, a mulch the first winter is advisable. e+e
NOTE: While we have been enabled to reduce prices on many of our finest kinds this year, we have also been obliged to withdraw many kinds from sale in order to build up adequate stocks. It is not possible to keep an even supply of over 400 varieties. We can supply most of the kinds omitted this year, if arranged by special corres- pondence, but we believe the printed list covers an ample range of types, colors and seasons of bloom for all but the advanced specialist.
LILIES—UMBELLATUM ERECTUM
Orange red with dark dots, shaped like a wine goblet. One of earliest lilies to bloom, early June. Tall and very strong grower, in partial shade or full sun. Plant 10 inches deep after Sept. 20th. Can be easily forced in house in winter. 2 for 50c, 6 for $1.25, 12 for $2.00.

FROM ILLINOIS—Arcturus, Nippon Brilliant and Nippon Beauty are good in every respect.
FROM ALABAMA—Cherry Hill, Richard Carvel, Felix Crousse, Red God- dess, Topeka and Tempest were good, but my best red was Auten’s Big Ben. Prudence and Siloam are free and desirable in every way. Virginia Lee is a most promising late pink. It is worthy of trial by all who seek the best.
FROM MINNESOTA—Rose Marie—this one is a deep velvety red with absolutely no blue in it. When compared to some of the older reds it certainly is a standout.
FROM NEW HAMPSHIRE—John Harvard is a beautiful rich crimson that I would not be without.
